From coding classes to robotics camps, we are seeing more offerings in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math programming than ever before. Introducing today’s students to new innovative concepts and training in these areas opens up a world of possibilities for their futures, and a rich talent pool for our City’s future.
The importance of honing these skills in our youth early on is crucial as our world continues to transform rapidly. Looking to recent history to predict our future, we have seen how quickly technology and businesses have evolved. To keep up and maintain competitiveness, ongoing training and reskilling is a necessity.
While the City’s focus remains on business retention and expansion, attracting foreign direct investment, and building an innovation ecosystem to support local economic growth, the approach the City takes in doing so has changed significantly because of COVID-19.
Central to the recovery and growth of Brampton’s economy post-COVID-19 is its talent. Training and reskilling individuals with the most relevant skills and capabilities for jobs of the future will ensure our economy’s resilience. Brampton University is a key component in our enhanced focus on talent to move our City into the future.
Through public and private partnerships, BramptonU will be a key component in developing, retaining, and attracting a skilled workforce that will help the City maintain and create jobs.
In alignment with the Economic Development Master Plan and Economic Recovery Strategy, Brampton will focus on promoting training and upskilling in its key sectors:
- Advanced Manufacturing
- Innovation and Technology
- Food and Beverage Processing
- Health and Life Sciences
Key potential outcomes of BramptonU in terms of economic impact include:
- Brampton University aims to become to a fully comprehensive public university with around 30,000 students by 2040.
- This drives approximately $750m in institutional expenditures, up to $1.5 billion in annual local economic impact and up to up to $7 billion in total economic impact. (These projections are based on a range of economic impact studies undertaken in the last ten years across Canada).
- Given the current estimate of at least 30,000 students for Brampton University by 2040, the CFI economic impact could be scaled to project at least $2bn (billion) annually in direct local economic impacts.
